Tree planting can deliver so much value to the planet - from supporting flora and fauna diversification to improving soil quality and moisture levels.
That’s why Switch2zero partners with Veritree on our tree planting initiatives, ensuring that every tree funded delivers measurable environmental and social impact. This article explores how that partnership works in practice – and why it matters for the communities and ecosystems involved.
While the impact of a tree on the global ecosystem is incredible, the impact of that same tree on the local community that helps plant it – through Veritree’s programmes – is equally immense.
The true value of Switch2Zero's partnership with Veritree lies in their holistic approach to restoration. It demonstrates that a tree is not merely a carbon sink, but a foundation for empowering communities and restoring entire ecosystems. This is why we insist that every project we fund must be rigorously verified, tracked, and planted in a strategically chosen location.
The Tree as a Social Anchor: Real Impact in East Africa
Veritree’s restoration model is inherently linked to strengthening communities. By working exclusively with local partners who secure land rights and involve communities from the outset, the projects deliver tangible human benefits that extend far beyond the forest boundary.
We consider the human impact of our funding to be crucial in delivering the ecological benefits. Our funding supports projects in regions like coastal Kenya and Tanzania, often in partnership with organisations like the EarthLungs Reforestation Foundation.
To ensure impact, Veritree tracks and measures key social metrics:
- Total Employment: Veritree projects create thousands of jobs, providing stable income where opportunities are often scarce.
- Women’s Empowerment: Women are prioritised for employment, often making up a majority of the workforce in activities like nursery participation. Many women surveyed, who previously relied on unpredictable sources like farming, now report stable income.
- Access to Services: Team members, such as those working on mangrove sites in Mtwapa Creek, Kenya, are provided benefits like health insurance for themselves and their families after three months of full-time employment. The stable income allows them to join microfinance groups or SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperatives).
This means that every time you fund Switch2Zero to plant trees on your behalf, your contribution directly creates local livelihoods - whether through employment as planters or by improving community access to vital resources.
Strategic Planting for Maximum Ecosystem Health
The effectiveness of reforestation is entirely dependent on its location. Veritree’s strategic approach starts with local knowledge and science. The projects we support are highly diverse, ensuring a resilient and widespread impact by meeting the unique needs of a local environment:
- Mangrove Restoration: This effort, for example, helps protect coastlines against erosion and creates crucial habitats for fish and other marine life.
- Post-Wildfire Restoration: Targeting areas damaged by natural events to restore native species and prevent further degradation.
- Agroforestry: Integrating trees into agricultural lands to improve soil health, productivity, and local food security.
Crucially, Veritree uses sophisticated technology to prove that this ecological impact is being achieved:
- Biodiversity Tracking: Bioacoustic Sensors and Trail Cameras are deployed to passively monitor wildlife sounds and activity, proving that the restored habitat is successfully attracting and supporting diverse species.
- Survivability Assurance: Long-term Survivability Reports track the trees' growth rates, average height, and diameter, directly proving that the "paying it forward" philosophy will come to fruition.
Building a Restorative Future: The Scale of Our Commitment
Our partnership with Veritree is a commitment to the bigger picture. We look holistically at where trees need to be planted in the world to create the greatest impact on the environment and support communities. This is why we insist on funding projects that will have a greater impact, rather than simply completing the job quickly and moving on.
To date, Veritree has reached a landmark milestone of 100 million trees pledged across its global projects and has planted and verified 64 million trees. In total, the efforts backed by Veritree are expected to sequester over 15 million tonnes of CO2.
By investing in this verifiable, community-led, and technology-backed approach, your contribution - and Switch2Zero’s commitment - transforms into a powerful, quantifiable force for global change. This data-driven focus on both social and environmental outcomes gives us the assurance we need to confidently share our story. You can rest easy knowing that your actions are leading to real, meaningful impact.
