The Foundation of Trust: Why Switch2Zero Chose a Verified Path to Tree Planting

In the fight against climate change, one of the most powerful and accessible actions a company can take is to invest in natural climate solutions, particularly tree planting.

However, as this movement has grown, so too has a significant challenge: the crisis of trust.

For many customers and investors, the question persists: How do I know the trees I paid for are actually in the ground, that they'll survive, and that they’re making a real difference?

At Switch2Zero, we recognise this scepticism is valid. The global ambition to restore ecosystems and combat the climate crisis through nature-based solutions is often undermined by projects that lack transparency, proper monitoring, or robust reporting. When the trail of money ends without verifiable proof of planting and growth, it creates a void where accountability should be.

This systemic lack of data and tracking leaves room for doubt, often referred to as greenwashing, making it nearly impossible for businesses to confidently share their positive claims.

This is why, for us, planting trees is only half the commitment - the other half is proving it.

So, to give our customers and investors the highest level of certainty, we searched for a partner that was built from the ground up to solve the transparency problem. That partner is Veritree.

A Commitment to a Better Tomorrow

For Switch2Zero, our purpose in planting trees is rooted in paying it forward. Trees are vital architects of a stable climate and a sustainable environment. They are critical for sucking CO2 from the air, stabilising soil, maintaining productive soil moisture levels, and supporting wider ecosystem sustainability. Critically, they also help to support communities - who are crucial partners in all tree planting programmes.

However, for a tree to reach its most effective level, it must reach maturity, which takes years. By funding tree planting today, we are providing for a better tomorrow. Our goal isn't just to talk about becoming carbon neutral now, but to focus on building enough strength in the environment to support human (and all other life) activity going forward.

Born from the Need for Proof

Veritree’s origin story is a testament to its mission. The platform was created by the founders of the sustainable clothing brand 10 Tree, who initially faced the same accountability challenge we aim to avoid.

When 10 Tree’s customers and investors asked for proof that their purchases were leading to actual, surviving trees, the founders discovered that their existing planting partners could offer "no data" and "no tracking" - just a general assurance. This led to a fundamental realisation: in the restorative economy, good intentions aren't enough; you need unassailable evidence.

The Veritree platform was built to bridge this gap, solving the problem of groups claiming tree planting "but there's nothing beyond that". Their mission is simple yet audacious: to help restore the planet by planting one billion verified trees by 2030.

The Mechanism of Unbreakable Trust

For Switch2Zero, our partnership with Veritree is the assurance we provide that your investment leads to real, meaningful restoration. We sought a mechanism to establish a clear "trace of money coming in, trees being planted, and that surety we want to give investors or people working with us".

The Veritree platform delivers verified tree planting through a technology-first approach that ensures the data is accurate and transparent.

At the heart of this accountability system is the use of blockchain technology. While this term is sometimes associated with volatile concepts like cryptocurrency, in this context, it simply functions as an immutable digital ledger. Once planting data and evidence are collected on the ground and verified, they are logged onto the blockchain. This process creates an unalterable, tamper-proof record.

This mechanism is crucial because it ensures end-to-end transparency and permanently eliminates the risk of double counting for any tree allocated to a corporate partner.

This is further enforced by Veritree’s rigorous 3-Level Verification system, which demands accountability from the moment a sapling is placed in the ground:

  • Level 1 (Planters): Field teams submit initial data, photos, and GPS coordinates via the proprietary Collect App.
  • Level 2 (Site Management): Local project managers check the data against external records and site quality control processes, such as reviewing the minimum required evidence.
  • Level 3 (Veritree Internal Team): Veritree’s own Innovation and Field Operations Team conducts a final, thorough analysis, often using machine learning algorithms, to check for accuracy, remove duplicates, and ensure all internal standards are met before the tree is published and allocated.

Veritree: The Proof is in the Planting

For Switch2Zero, partnering with Veritree means we no longer have to ask customers to simply trust our claim; we can confidently provide them with the verifiable proof. This partnership transforms your investment from a hopeful gesture into a restorative, measurable outcome, backed by technology and transparent data.

In our next article, we’ll dive deeper into the science and strategy behind this process, exploring the fascinating technology Veritree uses - such as bioacoustic sensors and drone imaging - to monitor tree health, track biodiversity, and ensure the long-term survivability of the trees you helped plant.
